Destrehan's Cara Ursin named Gatorade Louisiana Girls Basketball Player of the Year according to : nola

(Photo by Michael DeMocker, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune)In its 32nd year of honoring the nation's best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company announced on Monday that Destrehan's Cara Ursin as its 2016-17 Gatorade Louisiana Girls Basketball Player of the Year. As a Gatorade Player of the Year, Cara will be able to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program. A two-time returning Gatorade State Player of the Year, the 5-foot-7 senior guard led the Wildcats to a 35-0 record and the Class 5A state championship this past season. She has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball on scholarship at Baylor University beginning this fall. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Ursin as Louisiana's best high school girls basketball player.

She is a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year, to be announced in March. Current Oregon State player Katie McWilliams was the award winner in 2014-15.

Indiana commit Jaelynn Penn named Gatorade Kentucky Girls Basketball Player of the Year

Penn was just named Gatorade Kentucky Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Every year, Gatorade lables the best high school basketball players from each state, and now Penn will be joining the elite group. Indiana University currently has five high school women's basketball players committed to joining the program next fall. Last year, Penn was named the MVP of the Kentucky state championship tournament, and now she is looking to repeat with that honor again this year. Penn currently averages 14.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.2 steals per game in her senior season at Butler High School.
